Earlier this week, Rihanna was spotted taking a late-night walk around New York City in the platonic ideal of a casual July fit: classic white tank top, drawstring shorts, oversized jacket, and a backwards fitted Yankees cap. It was an elevated spin on the kind of thing you’d throw on to buy chips from the gas station—which, on Rihanna, wound up looking effortlessly, outrageously cool.

Rih rounded off her laid-back look with a pair of Puma Super Ligas, a classic suede sneaker from the German athletic giant. The Liga is a streamlined low-top with bold, two-tone color blocking, not unlike perennial summer style icon the Adidas Samba. The style launched as an indoor soccer shoe in the '80s, and has hung around in the Puma lineup as a versatile lifestyle option in recent years.

Rihanna, of course, has had a long and fruitful relationship with Puma. The nine-time Grammy winner dropped her latest sneaker collab with the brand just last week: the Fenty x Puma Creeper Phatty “In Session,” a new back-to-school themed shoe with an oversized silhouette and gum sole. Available in both triple black and red and white, the sneaker was launched alongside an elaborate campaign starring Anjelica Huston and Chloe Cherry, exactly the sort of inspired combo you’d expect from Rihanna.

The Fenty x Puma line has been ongoing for nearly a decade now, and Rihanna continues to serve as the partnership's creative director. But as this latest savvy, affordable choice proves, she doesn’t need to rely on her own limited-edition drops to make the most of the Puma back catalog.
